Champions League 2012-13: The last week-end before the group stage kick-off

In the week preceding the World Cup qualification matches, there was, as always, plenty of interesting action going on in the European pitches.

In the first clash involving two Champions League participants

the Ukrainian champions easily won the national derby against Dynamo Kyiv. Though Yarmolenko managed to score once between two goals of defender Oleksandr Kucher, the Kyiv side didn’t have too many chances. In a match where 9 yellow cards were shown to the teams, the title holders were overall better. The intrigue was killed 10 minutes before the final whistle, when Luiz Adriano set the final score – 3-1.

The noisy PSG was looking for the first win in the league in a match, where they visited Lille. The match calmed down after the first 20 stormy minutes, where Aurelien Chedjou’s header turned to be a consolation answer to the two classical one-on-one goals by Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The PSG number 18 has scored 4 goals in 4 matches now.

Later in the evening Nou Camp saw a very dynamic match between Barcelona and Valencia. The fabulous strike from Adriano became a decider. Villanova’s team is the only Spanish league team, which hasn’t lost any points yet. Valencia is one step away from the relegation zone, however they have the two worst matches of the season behind – away encounters with Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The latter won for the first time in this season’s Primera. Ronaldo scored his first two goals. This time it was not any of his goals, but the story around them, that became an issue. Ronaldo didn’t celebrate the scorings, mysteriously claiming that he is not happy!

Thomas Mueller
The Champions League silver medalists and winning candidates from Munich showed some master class in the home game against Stuttgart. Going down by a goal, Heynckes’s side scored whole 6 goals in 19 (!) minutes. Goals were scored by Muller (2), Kroos, Gustavo, Mandzukic and Schweinsteiger. Muller is the Bundesliga topscorer with 3 goals.

But the football week had started with the match called European season curtain raiser. Champions of Champions League were brutally destroyed by Falcao and his Atletico Madrid. Marvelous goals of the Colombian striker made Europe feel sorry that this wonderful striker will be missing in the Champions League group stage this season. The final score was 4-1; the only Chelsea goal coming from Gary Cahill on the 75th minute.

The matches before Champions League group stage start include some spectacular local encounters, including the Danish Superliga match between FC Copenhagen and FC Nordsjælland, where the ex-champions will challenge the current title holders; and the match, where Zenit will test Terek, surprisingly having equal points with Russian champions. The Portuguese teams received a day-off this time, so now they can concentrate on the continental trophy.

Welcome to the week where Champions League 2012-13 group stage will kick off. All the teams have equal points and equal chances to earn the necessary points to advance. Now it is up to them to make history. The central matches of the first matchday are Real Madrid (Spanish champions) – Manchester City (English champions) for Tuesday and Chelsea (Champions League champions) –Juventus (Italian champions) for Wednesday. Let the strongest win!

About Me

My photo
I am a professional football watcher. I watched the WC '94, when I was 10 years old and have had no success in quitting with this. I promised R. Baggio to give tribute to his Juventus and Italy team ever-since, as he missed that damned penalty. While watching matches I always try to analyze every fact before, during and after the matches. This makes me feel I am an expert. Everyone is welcome to start a conversation on any football-related topic. You would just make me a huge favour. Besides, I am a hopelessly lost gambler. A player, not only in the game, but also in life! I live in Denmark. I am married, which, of course, prevents me of watching football 24 hours a day. My daughter was born in 2011. This fact is neither a football-friendly one, but it does not disappoint me. I am making my first steps in professional scouting with one of the local companies. If this profile sounds something close to you, I would warmly welcome you to follow my blog, where you'll read about everything I mentioned above. I promise to post an article every week. Let's say Saturday. So here we go!
