Champions League 2012-13: The week bringing the first defeats for Juventus, PSG and Ajax

The major matches of the week:

Antonio Conte in a special cabinIn the central match of the European weekend, Derby d'Italia, Juventus started strong against Inter, but as it usually happens, they decided to save some energy after the first goal. For the first time in 50 matches they didn’t succeed. Lichtsteiner’s aggressiveness, Vucininc’s sloppiness, Bendtners impotency and Pirlo’s tiredness coincided with Stramaccioni’s attacking mood. A deserved loss for the champions, who showed their worst second-half performance in quite a long period of time. Antonio Conte is
returning in a month.

Manchester United was playing against Arsenal. Manchester won easily without showing anything extraordinary. Business as usual. The overall impression from the match was that we were watching the next halves of the Chelsea-Manchester United clash a week before. As in the match against Chelsea, United scored pretty early, but Arsenal was not able to recover from this shock. And again Antonio Valencia’s role was crucial, as most of the attacks were developing in the right flank; Wayne Rooney was carrying some defensive responsibilities, and, of course, Robin van Persie scored his goal. One of the season’s biggest troublemakers of the Arsenal defense remained on the bench, so someone had to overtake Koscielny’s responsibilities. It was Vermaelen who failed to clear the ball in a simple situation in the episode followed by the former Arsenal captain’s goal. Later in the half Rooney missed a penalty, which made the visitors hope for a lucky day. These hopes were destroyed by Evra’s goal on the 67th minute. The referee had to show nine yellow cards, two of which went to Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere. The Mancunians won and climbed onto the top of the table for the first time this season.

Valencia was meeting Atletico Madrid, one of the teams, along with Barcelona, that hadn’t lost a match yet. It was a pretty nervous match, where Valencia’s manager Mauricio Pellegrino was sent off in the first half. The winner was scored by Valencia’s captain Soldado, who executed a fantastic volley after Rami’s cross. The home side did not hurry to score the second, but the team managed to avoid the equalizer. They prevented Atletico from organizing quick counterattacks thanks to their intense midfield. The only possibility the visitors were left with was trying long shots, which didn’t bring goals in that particular match. The Valencia captain armband had to travel a lot, as Soldado was substituted and the second captain was sent off afterwards.

Highlights of the week:

-        -  Ajax equaled to all other Eredivisie clubs that already had lost at least once. It was Vitesse, who defeated the champions in their own turf,
-         - Anderlecht’s Tom de Sutter scored a hat-trick, to help his team win over Mechelen and keep on sharing the first position with Thorgan Hazard’s Zulte-Waregem,
-         - Eden Hazard’s Chelsea lost the first position for the first time since the start of the season,
Zlatan Ibrahimovic was sent off for showing some karate skills
-         - PSG, as Ajax and Juventus, was the last team to register a loss in the domestic league. Zlatan Ibrahimovic got a direct red card for trying some karate tricks on St. Etienne’s goalkeeper,
-          - Before the historic win over Barcelona Celtic was close to earn three points in the match against Dundee United by two goals to nil, but managed to concede two in the last two minutes of the match,
-         - The average position of the Champions League participants keeps on improving: 3,44 now.

The upcoming weekend:

We will witness Belgium’s biggest rivalry between Anderlecht and Club Brugge this weekend, Ukraine will be expecting the Donetsk derby, where Shakhtar can set an incredible record, if they win the last match of the first round. Another big title is a match between the Greek AEK Athens and Olympiacos, although the teams are situated in different poles of the table. Bayern will host the German breakthrough of the season, Eintracht. And the central match of the weekend is going to take place in France, where the champions Montpellier will host the league leader PSG.

About Me

My photo
I am a professional football watcher. I watched the WC '94, when I was 10 years old and have had no success in quitting with this. I promised R. Baggio to give tribute to his Juventus and Italy team ever-since, as he missed that damned penalty. While watching matches I always try to analyze every fact before, during and after the matches. This makes me feel I am an expert. Everyone is welcome to start a conversation on any football-related topic. You would just make me a huge favour. Besides, I am a hopelessly lost gambler. A player, not only in the game, but also in life! I live in Denmark. I am married, which, of course, prevents me of watching football 24 hours a day. My daughter was born in 2011. This fact is neither a football-friendly one, but it does not disappoint me. I am making my first steps in professional scouting with one of the local companies. If this profile sounds something close to you, I would warmly welcome you to follow my blog, where you'll read about everything I mentioned above. I promise to post an article every week. Let's say Saturday. So here we go!
