Champions League 2012-13: The first El Classico of the season

Tobias Sana of Ajax
The Dutch Ajax started showing its class only in the second round of Eredivisie. The champions moved with a course of a goal per 10 minutes until the score became 5-0. For the remaining time the opponent received some air to breath. The final score is
6-1 and Ajax has only one team in front. Interesting that the first 10 official goals of the Amsterdam team this season are scored by 9 different people. The top scorer is Tobias Sana with 2 goals.

Robin van Persie, Manchester United
The English Premier League was meant to have an intriguing start. Everton was the first to compete against Manchester United this season. Here at Goodison Park was the sensation of the week meant to be born. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side not only lost the match, but was also lucky to escape a bigger defeat. Before scoring the matchwinner by Marouane Fellaini, the home side had to hit the post a couple of times and bother De Gea all the time. 1-0 and Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and others got something to think over during the week.

The Champions of Champions from London have a 100% record after 2 matches against Wigan and Reading.

The two Champions League participants from Spain were drawn to start their season with a match against each other. The not-much-changed Real Madrid was visited by totally reconstructed Valencia. Everything went as expected until the 42nd minute. A huge advantage and a scoring from the home side was all we had seen by the moment Jonas from the guests cheated Xabi Alonso, Pepe and Casillas, to send the ball into the net. The last two crashed into each other recklessly. The Portuguese has not yet appeared on the pitch after that. That was the last goal of the match.

The brutal crash of Pepe and Casillas

But the most important of all had to happen in Spain on Thursday. The first El Classico of this season didn’t deceive our expectations. The two giants had to fight for the Spanish Super Copa. The first half of the match between was developing as if Barcelona and Real Madrid had never met before and they needed to observe each other. But the second half was exactly what we were looking for. We saw 4 goals in the first 30 minutes of the second half and when everything was very close to be decided, the two goalkeepers kept the intrigue in this confrontation alive. Messi could not beat Iker Casillas from a very close distance; the ball appeared in the opposite part of the pitch, where Victor Valdez decided to dribble in front of Angel Di Maria. The result was the change of the score into 3-2 in favour of Barcelona, who will pay the returning visit to Madrid on the 30th of August. Messi and Ronaldo scored a goal each. The season is underway!

We are expecting the Italian and German leagues to start this weekend. Other big expectations will be the top matches in France, where the champions and vice champions will still be looking for their first win in the league. This time they will meet heavyweights from Marseille and Bordeaux relatively. A local derby is expected in Turkey: there is always something going on when Besiktas and Galatasaray meet.

Finally, next week we will know the names of the last 10 teams to setup this year’s Champions League group stage. The draw of the group stage will take place on Friday. It is very close now.

About Me

My photo
I am a professional football watcher. I watched the WC '94, when I was 10 years old and have had no success in quitting with this. I promised R. Baggio to give tribute to his Juventus and Italy team ever-since, as he missed that damned penalty. While watching matches I always try to analyze every fact before, during and after the matches. This makes me feel I am an expert. Everyone is welcome to start a conversation on any football-related topic. You would just make me a huge favour. Besides, I am a hopelessly lost gambler. A player, not only in the game, but also in life! I live in Denmark. I am married, which, of course, prevents me of watching football 24 hours a day. My daughter was born in 2011. This fact is neither a football-friendly one, but it does not disappoint me. I am making my first steps in professional scouting with one of the local companies. If this profile sounds something close to you, I would warmly welcome you to follow my blog, where you'll read about everything I mentioned above. I promise to post an article every week. Let's say Saturday. So here we go!
